The year 2020 was supposed to mark the end of one decade and the beginning of another. But this year had a couple of surprises hidden under its sleeves. Some of the surprises were well received, while others left the world surprised. Here are the main events of the year that caught global attention.
1) The Australian Bush Fire
The fire that began from December 2019, continued in the new-year and burned over 74 million acres. It destroyed the flora and fauna of the Australian forests. Many people had to re-habitat, causing around 34 casualties. First the depleting Great Barrier Reef and now the bush fire have caused great distress on Australia’s natural reserves.
2) No More Royalty
On the 6 of January Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle declared they were renounce their royal status in order to lead a simple life with little prince Archie. This caused a talk around the world, but soon the couple’s decision was well accepted.
3) Parasite Sweeps the Oscar
Parasite a Korean film wins Academy award for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best International Feature Film. Becoming the first non-English film to bag the honour on February 9th.
4) Covid-19
Not much needs to be said here, the viral infection started spreading globally since March and is still one of the biggest problems faced by many countries. Wuhan Virus has caused a lot of unnatural deaths this year, leading to a worldwide lockdown.
5) Italy losing its battle against COVID-19
Spain and Italy still are world’s worst-hit countries by Corona till date. In April this year Italy lost its battle against Corona and causing 9400 deaths in a population of 10 million.
6) Stock Market Crash
Due to the recession caused by Corona, Stock Market crashed in March.
7) Chinese Apps Banned
In the course of lockdown 59 chinese apps were banned in India due to the increasing distress between the two countries. Banning of Pub-G Caused great disappointment in Indian youth.
8) North Korean Dictator no more?
In the mid-year there were rumours claiming death of North- Korean Dictator. But soon the confusion was cleared, revealing Kim Jong Un’s ill health.
9) Beriut Explosion
Amidst the Pandemic the explosion in Beriut shook the world. The viral video capturing the explosion is gut wrenching enough. The reasons of the explosion was accidental detonation of 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate, killed at least 190 people and injuring thousands more.
10) Joe Biden wins the US Presidency
46th President of The United States. Joe Biden beats Trump. Kamala Harris becomes first coloured lady Vice President of the US.
