There are more than 8000 dead bodies and around 1,252 mummies preserved, it is said to be the resting place of the dead’s afterlife. Most of the catacombs are of the ancient rich people are the monks also there are some common people as well.

The Capuchin Catacombs is also know as The Capuchin Catacombs of Palermo or Catacombe dei Cappuccini or Catacombs of the Capuchins.

A mummy is a corpse that has been preserved after death and it has not decomposed. It is considered a mummy, and not simply a skeleton, the body that possesses a bit of its tissue, such as skin, hair, muscles. This can happen as a natural process, called natural mummification, or as a purposeful method, called artificial mummification.

Most of the bodies are naturally preserved on the basis of dehydration, there is a ritual of bathing the bodies with arsenic. The bodies are embalmed and well preserved. The catacombs were then used to maintain other members of the brotherhood and the monks apparently did such a reasonable job that in the 18th and 19th century it also became a popular resting place for the wealthy Europeans and Sicily’s elite.

The catacombs are full of clergy and high ranking specialists. Palermo’s Capuchin monastery outgrew its original boneyard in the 16th century and monks proceeded to carve crypts below it. Monks were conserved with their everyday clothes and sometimes with ropes they had worn as a penance. Originally the catacombs were aimed at only for the dead friars.

Earlier the catacombs of Palermo were not for the audience to watch but as the year passes, the family members and the related members of the catacombs authority started making money out of it and of course, people are fascinated about such things so they started to visit there out of curiosity and excitement to know the fact of the history and watch these weird and kind of scary place and gradually it became a famous tourist spot of attraction.
