Did you know how Grapes reached India  

The grapes have been launched in India by Persian invaders again in 1300AD. India is among the first 10 countries in the world, in the production of grapes. This crop occupies the 5th position amongst fruits crops in India. The area under grape in India is 79.6 thousand hectares with an annual product of 1878.3 thousand million tons.

In India, grapes are cultivated in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu & Andhra Pradesh. The Nashik city in Maharashtra is named, The Grape capital of India, as it ranks excessive in grape cultivation.

Grapes are crushed into fermenting wine, dried into raisins, combined into making jams & make an ideal topping for salad and dessert. However, in India grapes are mostly consumed as fresh fruit & a limited quality is utilized for the production of liquor. Fresh grapes are being exported from India to about 30 countries which includes U. K, U. A. E., Srilanka, Bangladesh, Kuwait, Germany, Oman & Saudi Arabia.

Grape varieties cultivated in India are Perlette, Thompson seedless, crimson seedless, Anab-e- Shahi, flame seedless, beauty seedless, kishmish seedless.

Sula Vineyards

Sula Vineyards is a famous for winery. It boasts for 60 wineries and being the first in India. Its is located in Nashik, 180KM from Mumbai. Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Zinfandel are some of the varieties of grape wines. The estate spread across 1800 acres has become one of the famous tourist places in India.

Types of Grapes

Grapes are categorized into 2 types

  • Table Grapes
  • wine Grapes

Both of these types have unique texture, sweetness, & taste.

  1. Table Grapes

They are seedless & consumed fresh. They are used in salads & recipes. They are green, black, purple, red.

  1. Wine Grapes

They are smaller, usually seeded & have relatively thick skins.

Health benefits of eating grapes

  1. Loaded with antioxidants

 Grapes are the powerhouse of antioxidants. Red grapes contain higher numbers of antioxidants due to anthocyanins that give them color. The antioxidants remain present even after fermentation. Grapes contain the antioxidants resveratrol which is classified as polyphenol. They help to repair the damaged cells and also control the Oxidative stress associated with chronic disease.

  1. Full of nutrients & vitamins 

Grapes offer a wealth of health benefits due to their highly nutritious, vitamin-rich, and antioxidant content. One cup of Grapes gives us more than a quarter of RDI for vitamin K. It is Useful for blood clotting & healthy bones. They are a good source of vitamin C. Important for tissue health. It has a high amount of potassium.

  1. Anticancer properties

Through a study, it is revealed that purple-colored grape juice helps in preventing breast cancer. & there is a reduction in mammary tumor mass. Resveratrol antioxidant helps in DNA repair free radical damage. Grapes block the growth & spread of cancer cells within the body.

  1. Beneficial for heart health

Eating grapes is good for your heart health. Phytochemicals present in grapes activate a process in our genes to help to reduce the damage to the heart muscle. Grapes increase the nitric oxide level in the blood, which prevents blood clots thereby reducing the chances of a heart attack. Grapes contain potassium thus it helps to lower blood pressure & also reduce cholesterol and maintain heart health.

  1. Decrease blood sugar level & protect against diabetes

Grapes are a good choice for people with diabetes. They have a low glycemic index. Resveratrol has been seen to show the increase in insulin sensitivity, which may help to improve your body’s ability to use the glucose.
