India’s famous Rapper Badshah’s Super Hit Song “Genda Phool” bags 4th spot among most viewed songs of 2020
Indian music has got great potential and time and again the world has acknowledged the stupendous talent arising from our soil. This year it’s literally a time for celebration as an Indian chartbuster has beaten world records and grabbed fourth spot on the list of most watched songs of the year 2020 by Spin or Bin Music.
“Genda Phool” has got quite a catchy appeal to it and it stands strong at 705 million views on YouTube. The song has a distinct folk melody fused with uber urban sounds. Not to forget the mesmerizing Bengali vocals of singer Payal Dev and the steamy dance by the very gorgeous Jacqueline Fernandez – they rendered the song millions of eyeballs and ears.
Hailed as the Hitmaker, Badshah has been producing commercially successful songs for quite some years now and a recognition like this puts him on a higher pedestal as he goes to share the space with Drake, Future, BTS and BLACKPINK.
Drake and Future topped the list as their song “Life is Good” received 1.4 billion views so far. K-Pop has become a craze over the recent years and this seems evident as BTS and BLACKPINK secured the second and third spot respectively.
‘Dynamite’ by BTS and ‘How You Like That’ by BLACKPINK ruled the playlists in 2020 and there stood ‘Genda Phool’ just next to them. It is quite surprising that Badshah’s song beat out that of Justin Bieber and other global stars to grab the fourth spot.
The year has begun on a celebratory note with this milestone that I share with some of the most renowned artists of the world. As a musician, I try to experiment and see where the music takes me and I am glad that it has resulted in so many people being entertained globally. This achievement has refreshed the memories of making Genda Phool and I hope the spirit of celebration continues.”Responding to this unprecedented feat Badshah said in a statement
While Badshah appears to be at the center of this success, it must be a proud moment for all the artists associated with this song – the musicians, actors and people in the production. A hell lot of coordination and effort goes into making a song resonate with the masses.
Definitely, it’s not just the lines penned down by the rapper that can create the magic alone, there are tens of other elements and so it is imperative to thank, congratulate and celebrate each one of them. And we cannot deny what a magic the sheer presence of Jacqueline Fernandez added to the song.
And now that the song has garnered so much glory, we hope it may rise above the controversy once it was badly embroiled in. Or maybe that heated conversation will erupt again. Reportedly, the songwriter had been accused of plagiarism by netizens and called out for not giving credit to the original song.
Controversy around “Genda Phool” Song
Notably, renowned music composer A.R. Rahman has a song with the same title in his album for the movie Delhi 6 starring Abhishek Bachchan and Sonam Kapoor in lead roles. Also, the Bengali lyrics used in Badshah’s song is claimed to be copied from a Bengali folk song “Boroloker Beti lo” written by veteran artist Ratan Kahar in the 1970s. The music video however credits the original lyrics to ‘Bengali Folk’ with no credit to the writer.
Factually, the song ‘’Genda Phool” received a lot of backlash from netizens ever since its release on March 26, 2020 on SONY Music India’s YouTube channel. Firstly, it smelled like a pirated version of A.R. Rahman’s song and then it was slammed for some inappropriate lines in its rap. But nobody knew that the same song will become so popular one day.
So, in today’s times it is hard to predict the fate of a song or film. Audience is the king and audience has got varied tastes and you never know what they may like. That is why we can see a lot of music composers experimenting quite a lot. The most commercially successful musicians in this era are not the ones who have had very rigorous training in music and who have it in them to produce songs that can go down the generations but they rightly know their audience and alongside the music labels they are aptly tapping the business prospects in music.
Long story short, any sort of music that helps us unwind, chill and relax deserves its due credit. And the way ‘Genda Phool’ has received global recognition, there is definitely something special about it which has been slowly but surely acknowledged.
