Spirits, ghosts, and folklores about them have always been in our culture. The belief has become more like a ritual, people believe in the spirits, bad and the good ones. Like the foreign culture of foreign, there’s Halloween, so, as for Bengalis, they have Bhoot Chaturdashi.
The Bengali Hindu community celebrates Bhoot Chaturdashi, which generally on the 14th day of Krishna Paksha waning phase of the moon at the dusk before Kali Puja / Dipaboli festival. On this night, Bengalis light 14 earthen-lamps (choddo prodip) at their houses to placate the spirits of their prior 14 generations of forefather.
It is understood that in the dark before Kali Puja, the souls of these forefathers plunge upon the earth, and these lights assist them to locate their respective residences. There are numerous types of spirits and related supernatural beings that repeatedly appear in Bengali culture, its folklores, and shape a crucial part of Bengali peoples’ socio-cultural assumptions and beliefs. The cloak between the two worlds is narrow and it is thought on the eve of this night the spirits fall to the world to attend their beloved ones.
Bhoot Chaturdashi is similarly recognized as Naraka Chaturdashi. In Hindu myth, this is the day when the collective forces of Lord Krishna, Satyabhama, and Goddess Kali demolished the strong monster, Narakasura.
Given how crucial these illusions are to Bengali folklore, it brings about the feeling that there’s a day celebrating them. Ghosts are remembered by several terms and traits in the region.
There’s one, the Mechho Bhoot, who loves to eat fish, Petnis are female spirits who expired bachelor or with unsatisfied needs. Daittyo occurs human-like but is enormous in comparison and unbelievably powerful, Nishis are dark souls that attract victims to an isolated area by blurting to them by the voice of a respected one, Brahmodaittyo is the type, the decent ghost of Brahmins, Gechho bhoot is the spirits that reside in trees, and Mamdo bhoot, the spirits of Muslims.
These are different beliefs, which are being followed for ages and followed with full of emotions and joy.
