The first remembrance of the occasion was carried in Paris, France in 1987 when 100,000 people assembled on the Human Rights and Liberties Plaza at the Trocadéro to praise sufferers of deprivation, starvation, violence, and fear. Initiated by Joseph Wresinski, creator of the International Movement ATD Fourth World. In 1992, four years after Wresinski’s demise, the United Nations officially established October 17 as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.
Wresinski acknowledged that administrations frequently ignored the hardship of those living in poverty, overseeing the impressions of denial, embarrassment, and crime. As an outcome, one of the main goals of the Day is to recognize the battles of the underprivileged and to give rise to their voices to reach out to every ear. Participation by the poorest of people is a crucial facet of the observance of the Day.
